16-yr-old gets Valentine’s greeting from a ‘road rager’

A minor fender bender between a black VW and a white Mercedes at Mission Hospital on February 14 immediately became a one-sided road rage incident resulting in the arrest of a 56-year-old Dana Point man.

According to police, the 16-year-old boy driving the VW called police reporting the fender bender and told them he had been physically pushed and shoved by an older man who left the scene. He explained that the older man in the Mercedes had not given him any insurance information before leaving the scene.

The Trabuco Canyon teenager also gave the cops the Mercedes tag number.

Laguna Police called the Sheriff’s Department and deputies drove by the Mercedes registered owner’s home in Dana Point. The car was in the driveway. At the request of LBPD, deputies made contact with the suspect and detained him.

LBPD drove the teenager to a location in Dana Point away from the suspect’s neighborhood where he was able to make a positive ID.

Laguna cops arrested Hal David Johnson for assault and battery based upon the teen’s signed complaint.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Arrest made in theft of $60,000 Porsche 911

Laguna detectives arrested a Dana Point man for stealing a used Porsche 911 convertible valued at $60,000 from a dealership on Laguna Canyon Road last Tuesday after presenting bad checks. He told the dealership that he would take the car down the road to have it smog checked so that clear title could be available.

He didn’t return the car or phone calls from the dealer.

Detectives followed the paper trail the suspect had provided the dealer and the rest was relatively routine police work.

Howard Bruce Norton, 62, was arrested at his home and charged with two felonies – auto theft and possession of known stolen property.

No further information was available from LBPD because investigative supervisors and spokespersons were off on President’s Day.

Canyon dealership bilked out of $60,000 Porsche 911

A red Porsche 911 convertible was reported stolen by a dealership in the 2100 block of Laguna Canyon Road Tuesday.

The dealer valued the car at $60,000.

Police said a man presented $60,000 in checks to purchase the Porsche and said he wanted to get it smog checked in order to have a current title. He also told them he would purchase a second car when he returned.

LBPD Sgt. Louise Callus said via email, “While he was gone, the dealership learned that the checks were no good.

“He has not returned the car or phone calls from the victim.”

Police are investigating the information presented to the dealership as they look for the suspect.

From the City Manager: Vehicle Break-ins on the rise

The following was included as part of the City Manager’s regular Friday updates for the City Council”

“An unknown individual has been breaking car windows and removing valuables near the dog park and along Cliff Drive in broad daylight.

“Everyone is reminded not to leave purses, wallets, cell phones, computers and other possessions in their cars, whether locked or not.  In a few cases, the purses were hidden or under the seat so don’t assume this is an effective security measure.”

Fair warning…
