Breakers finish 2nd in preseason 48-team tourney

The LBHS girls’ volleyball team gave a pretty good indication of why the expectations are high for another big year under coach Lance Stewart in the chase for the CIF Southern Section Division 1-A top spot.

48 Division I teams met last Saturday in a pre-season tournament at Anaheim’s American Sports Center after only a few days of practice. The Breakers went to the finals in the Queens Court Tournament against Edison and came up short to finish second in the 48-team event.

Laguna Beach High School junior Yoshi Andersen recently returned from South Florida after competing at the 2010 Unión Americana de Natación (UANA) Junior Pan American Championships, where the USA Water Polo Women’s Junior National Team won the silver.

Playing against other elite water polo teams from Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, and Venezuela, the USA dominated throughout the competition. As expected, the Canadian team proved to be a formidable challenger.  Although the USA and Canada tied 9-9 in a pool play match, Canada fought hard to hold on to beat USA, 8-7, in the 2010 UANA championship game, beating USA 8 – 7 for the gold.

Andersen scored four goals during this championship game.
