Ben Hryn (right above) placed first in the San Diego Racing League at Quail Valley in Riverside County on July 17. It was Event 17 of the SDRL season. Hryn, pictured with the second and third place finishers, is from Laguna Beach. A new website for Laguna skateboarders has just been launched – – and despite still being under construction will be a web place to keep abreast with the positive aspects of Laguna skating said Tom Williams. “I think it is time these guys get some recognition for their accomplishments instead of all the controversy surrounding street skating in town,” he emailed this week.

Art doesn’t take a summer vacation at Boys & Girls Club

BG Photo

The Laguna Beach tradition of exciting art and creativity is alive and well at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach. Art takes place every day at the Club for the entire summer. Club Members are afforded the opportunity to join in one of the many exciting art clubs and programs as well as go on inspiring art based field trips!

Specialty Art Clubs offered this summer include; Global Art, Fine Art, Photography Club, Jewelry Making, Great Artists, Movie Making, Fine Arts, and Sculpture/ 3D Art. Participation in Art Clubs give members a chance to express themselves, as they learn new techniques and skills, while having fun.

Summer Photography Club includes having the members ride the trolley around to exciting locations all over Laguna as they learn how to capture photos from the world around them.  To top it off members will enter their photos in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Regional and National Competitions where they will compete with members from other Clubs all over the world.

This year, local club members Olivia Ladaire and Solei Prats have won at the Pacific Regional Photography Competition level and are now going on to the National level!

A new Club offered this summer is Movie Making, which provides members with hands on experience in the areas of writing, filming, acting, and editing their own movies. For the members interested in developing Fine Art skills the Fine Art Club provides instruction in new techniques using acrylic and watercolor paint, printmaking, collage, and mixed media as well as joining in Great Artists Club, where they learn about famous artists from history and then create their own art in a similar style.

The Club has some great art based field trips scheduled to inspire these budding young artists.  A couple of the highlighted field trips include a trip to the Festival of Arts for the Photography Club Mentorship Program and a special trip to the Sawdust Festival, sponsored by artist Tom Swimm, in which members get a tour of the festival and will even participate in a few great art projects including a Raku Ceramics project. There will also be a field trip to the local Laguna Art Museum to see the new Art Shack exhibit. In addition to these exciting art field trips members can join in on weekly Beach Days and make their own unique sculptures out of sand or sign up for one of the many camping trips organized by the Club that incorporates nature, art, and learning how to have tons of fun outside while camping!  It is clear that the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach is the place for kids to be this summer to have some fun with endless opportunities to be creative!

The Saloon & Laguna Playhouse

Anniversary party benefits youth theatre July 27

The Saloon’s Annual Anniversary Party on Tuesday, July 27 will benefit the Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre. The celebration will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Saloon in the Peppertree Lane at 446 South Coast Hwy.

Drink specials, hors d’oeuvres from neighboring restaurants and opportunity drawings through out the evening will add to the festivities.

The Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre is committed to providing young people with opportunities to experience theatre as entertainment, enrichment and enlightenment in different ways, depending upon their ages, interests, needs and abilities. The Youth Theatre Season offers plays primarily geared for children of elementary and middle school age – usually existing plays or musicals based on well-known, popular books or stories.

Uniquely within the region, the plays receive productions directed and designed by theatre professionals and fully mounted with the Playhouse’s technical resources. The cast and staff for each production are drawn principally from the Playhouse’s Youth Conservatory Program.

For more information on the anniversary event call 494-5469.
