A photographer’s favorite photos of 2024

For Stu News Laguna, staff photographer Mary Hurlbut produces around 107 albums a year, each compiled of either 12 photos (for a Laguna Life & People article) or 28-36 photos for an event. (Of course that doesn’t include the ones that she deletes.) That’s a lot of photos.
Looking back over a year of memorable photos shoots and events to select only a few photos must be difficult since each strikes a different emotional chord. However, for 2024, Mary chose four that were special to her – for a variety of reasons that she explained in the captions.

I love this portrait of Bob Taylor at his workshop – taken for a “Laguna Life & People” article. His tools and metal work in the background helped tell the story, plus the light flooding in from the huge doorway was perfect, but his joyful personality made it work.

The Brooks Street 4th of July Ceremony and Parade has become a fun tradition for my family, and I’ve been honored to document it for years. This photo captures all the fun, family and patriotism of the morning!

Photographing “Love Laguna Beach” gave me a few precious minutes with Skipper and a chance to create my last portrait of him. To hear him declare, “Have a Home-Run Day” was a wonderful blessing.

Winter Fantasy 2024 – Mayor Sue Kempf, Santa Chuck and snow bubbles in sunlight with a gingerbread house all worked together so perfectly – I love it when a quick photo comes together so beautifully because I knew where to have them stand.
