Sawdust Artists’ Benevolence Fund Auction Sunday

Sawdust Art & Craft Festival will host the 32nd Annual Benevolence Fund Auction this Sunday, Aug 12. The Sawdust Artists’ Benevolence Fund is a source of financial assistance for artists in Laguna Beach who have suffered a catastrophic event, leaving them unable to work. A silent auction will be held at the festival’s Healy House at 10 a.m. followed by a live auction on the main deck, beginning at 1 p.m.

The auction will feature an exciting selection of art created by Sawdust artists, including paintings, mixed media, ceramics, jewelry, clothing, photography, and more. These artists have generously donated their work with the goal of raising funds for fellow artists in times of need.

Professional auctioneer Tony DeZao, who will be presiding over the live auction, is sure to pack the experience with lots of laughs and entertaining stories.

“Over the years, our art auction has raised over $150,000. It’s encouraging to see how much our community of art patrons values local artists,” said Monica Prado, president of the Artists’ Benevolence Fund board of trustees.

This year the auction will spotlight a guest artist from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. “Our auction will be highlighting a beautiful mural by Puerto Rican artist, Jwan Perez-Ramos,” said trustee Jay Grant. “Ramos is the Sawdust Art Festival’s guest artist this year, a painter whose house was decimated last year by Hurricane Maria.”

The Sawdust will be matching the purchase price of Perez-Ramos’ mural dollar-for-dollar, up to $1,000. It’s the artist’s hope to be able to purchase a new roof for his family’s home.

Get unique original art by Sawdust artists for a good cause at the Sawdust Benevolence Fund Auction on Sunday

The Fund began as the Artists’ Relief Fund in 1987, when artwork was auctioned to help a critically ill Sawdust Festival artist. In 1993, the fund was reorganized as a nonprofit shelter within the Sawdust Festival and expanded to help not only Sawdust exhibitors, but any working artist in the city of Laguna Beach. With a $1,000 maximum monthly grant amount, the Artists’ Benevolence Fund has provided much needed financial relief and assistance to artists in times of need.

“Anyone may contribute to the Fund, but each summer, Sawdust artists rise to the occasion and selflessly donate their art to the annual Artists’ Benevolence Fund Art Auction. This special event accounts for the majority of the revenue raised for the Artists’ Fund,” said a Sawdust spokesperson.
