The Hive comes alive: Newly named district in the Canyon buzzes with artistic activity

With the renaming of the Laguna Arts District at 805-856 Laguna Canyon Road to “The Hive” this summer, Laguna Creative Ventures and the Honarkars are ushering in a new era, starting with the Summer of Color, featuring temporary murals by well-known artists.

Privately funded by the Honarkars, with partnerships with [seven-degrees] and Montana Colors, this unique and exquisite mural project is coming together beautifully at the location.

Over time, The Hive, featuring a plethora of local artisans, creators, and visionaries, will be a cultural and creative hub for people in the Laguna Arts District, says Executive Partner, Strategy and Development, Mark Orgill, of Laguna Creative Ventures.

Curated by Torrey Cook, founder and owner of contemporary art gallery Artists Republic, and Ben Rubin, owner of fine art print studio Elephants and Castles, the Summer of Color kicks off with three bright, large-scale murals by artists Brett Crawford, Beau Stanton and Chad Hasegawa.

Brett Crawford’s mural is, well, eye-catching

Cook believes that these murals will invigorate the area and help engage people to come to the city to explore its public art more with these well known and respected artists.

Additionally, future murals involved in the Summer of Color will include internationally celebrated Spanish artist Okuda, female powerhouses Faith47 and Casey O’Connell, and LCAD alumni James Thistlethwaite.
