Locally represented artist Derek Gores created the cover artwork for Playboy Limited Edition Hugh Hefner tribute

Locally represented collage artist Derek Gores, whose work is prominently displayed at Laguna Gallery of Contemporary Art (LGOCA), designed the Playboy magazine cover for the Hugh Hefner tribute, providing a unique take on his personal style of creating collage portraits. Gores assembled iconic Playboy covers, magazine features and versions of the Rabbit Head Logo into an abstract work of art.

“In the collage, I included hints and memories of the full legacy – the covers, the interviews, the lifestyle,” said artist Derek Gores. “In the end, I hoped to celebrate both the mischievous fun and the liberation Hef championed. My art form of collage is uniquely adept at referencing time, and I hope this piece takes Playboy fans back through the decades.”

The Limited Edition: Hugh Hefner Special Tribute is now available for purchase for $17.99 at and on newsstands nationwide (for approximately three months or until sold out).

In honor of the life and style of the iconic founder of the Playboy empire, the Hugh Hefner Special Tribute is a 120-page limited edition issue that details Hugh Hefner’s long life and the singular vision that fueled it all. The official Playboy tribute celebrates Hef’s life by documenting his early years as a cartoonist through his journey to editor-in-chief of the legendary magazine, revisiting rare images from the Playboy archives.

Special tributes included by Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr., Richard Lewis, Berry Gordy, Larry King, Jenny McCarthy, Christie Hefner, Dick Rosenzweig, Cindy Crawford, Art Paul, Kim Basinger and more. On the back cover is the widely known interpretation of the Rabbit Head Logo by Andy Warhol that appeared on Playboy’s January 1986 cover.

In his collage portraits, Derek Gores recycles magazines, labels, data, and assorted found analog and digital materials to create his pieces on canvas. Gores’ work is represented by Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles, ArtClubFrance in Paris, LGOCA in Laguna Beach, 19Karen Gallery in Australia, Parlor Gallery in Asbury Park, Gallery14 in Vero Beach, Charlestown Gallery in Rhode Island, Baisden Gallery in Tampa, and R House in Miami. Gores collector and commission list includes Prada, the Kentucky Derby, Loews Hotels, the San Francisco 49ers, Heineken, Tag Heuer, Adidas and others.

Gores is considered part of the “Pop Surrealism” or “New Contemporary” movements. He was named “One of the 40 important artists of the New Contemporary Movement” while exhibiting in London.
