Council recognized Woman’s Club for its K-9 efforts

On Nov. 18 Mayor Elizabeth Pearson read a proclamation recognizing the Woman’s Club for the fundraising efforts toward the purchase and training of the City’s new Police Dog.

Earlier this year at the 2014 Budget Meeting, the public was told that the City budget did not have the funds available to hire a K-9 officer, purchase a K-9 vehicle and purchase and train the police dog. During that meeting the Woman’s Club pledged to raise the necessary funds for purchase and training and the City agreed to fund the officer and the vehicle. The deal was made and the Woman’s Club has been hard at work ever since!

Mayor Elizabeth Pearson (left) read the proclamation recognizing the efforts by the Woman’s Club in securing the PD’s new K-9 “Ranger” with his LBPD handler Officer Zach Fillers with members of the LB Woman’s Club on November 18

At last week’s City Council meeting, “Ranger” and the officer who will be his handler, Zach Fillers were introduced to the community. The police department has named Ranger after fallen officer Jon Coutchie who was an Army Ranger.

“It warms my heart to see the community pull together to raise the money to purchase Ranger” said Barbara Crane, the current Woman’s Club President, “I am so proud of the Woman’s Club members and the board that pulled together to raise the money for Ranger”.

Although Ranger has been selected and has begun training, the Woman’s Club is still in need of funds. To date the Woman’s Club has raised approximately $7,000, which was enough for the down payment and the commencement of training. If you would like to contribute toward the remaining $13,000 to complete the purchase, please visit the Woman’s Club website at: Your contribution will make you a part of Laguna Beach history. Checks can be mailed to:  Woman’s Club (K-9 Donation) 286 St. Ann’s Drive, Laguna Beach, CA  92651
