Man arrested for allegedly stealing resident’s car in the Canyon

On Saturday, June 22, at 9:55 p.m., LBPD officers responded to a report of a vehicle that had just been stolen from a residence on Sun Valley Drive. The vehicle was seen traveling inbound on Laguna Canyon Road. 

Police Files MatekelcAccording to LBPD Spokesperson PIO Sgt Jim Cota, “Officers located the vehicle northbound in the 400 block of North Coast Highway. The driver made a U-turn and stopped along the west curb at the intersection of Jasmine Street and North Coast Highway. A high-risk traffic stop was conducted and the driver, local homeless subject Michael Matekel, was arrested.”

“The registered owner of the vehicle was still on 911 with LBPD dispatch and responded to the scene to make a positive identification as well as retrieve his vehicle. Matekel was transported to LBPD for booking and later taken to OC Jail,” Sgt Cota said. 

Michael Hays Matekel, 30, was arrested for alleged possession of a stolen vehicle.

Bail was set at $20,000.

According to Stu News records, Matekel has been arrested by LBPD an additional 15 times since May 2018 for various alleged offenses.

Suspects arrested for allegedly stealing beer and bologna, also for meth

On Saturday, June 22, at 5:33 p.m., LBPD officers were contacted by employees at Pavillions, at the 600 block of N Coast Hwy, regarding two subjects who allegedly shoplifted items and were running to their vehicle. 

According to Sgt Cota, “Officers immediately located and detained the subjects in the parking lot. An investigation was conducted as were searches of their persons and vehicle. A third subject was located inside the vehicle pretending to be sleeping.”

 Sgt Cota said, “It was discovered that the two subjects had stolen two cases of beer, a bag of chips, and a package of bologna. The store requested prosecution for the shoplifting. The items were located inside of the suspect’s vehicle as was two methamphetamine pipes and a small amount of methamphetamine.” 

Two of the subjects were identified as Moses Alderette and Kevin De La Cruz. The third subject was a 16-year-old juvenile male. 

“While inside of the store, the juvenile recognized De La Cruz and asked for a ride home. Once he secured the ride, the juvenile left the store with De La Cruz and headed towards his vehicle to leave,” Sgt Cota said.

Kevin Ulices De La Cruz, 25, of Costa Mesa, was arrested for alleged shoplifting, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a narcotic pipe. Moses Jasso Aldrette, 26, of Montclair, was arrested for alleged possession of a narcotic pipe.

The juvenile was detained and transported to LBPD. He was released to the custody of a juvenile home in north Orange County.

De La Cruz’s bail was set for $1,500. Alderette’s bail was set at $500.
