LB cop punched by intoxicated man – required stitches

An intoxicated man outside of an Ocean Avenue bar punched a Laguna Beach police officer in the face Saturday night. The officer required stitches in his chin.

Sgt. Tim Kleiser said Monday, “An officer saw two intoxicated men walking on the 200 block of Ocean Avenue near Hennessey’s at 9:58 p.m. The officer approached them to let them know they were too intoxicated and one walked towards the officer and tried unsuccessfully to grab his badge.”

Kleiser said the two men then tried to enter the bar but were told by the officer and a security guard that they were too drunk to go inside.

After a few words, the same man (Ben Percival, 29, Huntington Beach) that tried to grab the badge then aggressively approached the officer.

“The officer tried to push the male away, but was struck in the face by the male with a closed fist,” Kleiser said. “The officer was able to take the male to the ground and a security guard from Hennessey’s assisted the officer. Several other PD units arrived on scene and the male suspect was subsequently placed into handcuffs.”

Percival was arrested on charges of felony battery, felony resisting arrest, and misdemeanor battery on a peace officer.
