Laguna Beach Garden Club receives awards for The Good of The Hive mural and community service
The Good of the Hive mural received more accolades, the latest from the Laguna Beach Beautification Council, recognizing its contribution to beautifying Laguna Beach. The mural by artist Matt Willey is located at the Laguna Beach County Water District building, commissioned by the Laguna Beach Garden Club, as one of their many efforts to bring the plight of pollinators to the attention of the community. The mural is inspired by the philosophy that bees never forget that they are a part of something bigger than themselves and that all they do is for the “Good of the Hive.”

The goal of the Beautification Council is to inspire beauty that benefits the community. Awards go to homeowners, trees, gardens, developments, remodeling projects, artists and individuals who have consistently played a role in preserving the history and beauty of
Laguna. Not only was the mural recognized at the well-attended award celebration at Seven 7 Seven on Thursday night (Oct. 24), but the Garden Club was also selected as a winner for their contributions to the community.
A full table of club board members and representatives from the water district enjoyed a taco buffet and stories about the award winners. “Clearly, the council has been paying attention to our work, as several of the homes that received awards have been featured on the Gate & Garden Tour,” said Laguna Beach Garden Club Co-President Nancy Englund.
The Garden Club has been in existence for close to 100 years and has always had their mission to serve the community as not only a social and education club, but to be of service through education, scholarships and community projects. Last week, the club received an award from the Daughters of the American Revolution for the inspiring message and beauty that the mural brings to Laguna Beach as well as the dedication and service of the members. “We are honored and humbled by the recognition that the club has been receiving,” said Englund.
