Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987.

The Janes | March 13, 6:30 p.m.

“The Janes” – March 13

Imagine an underground network of women helping poor and desperate women get safe affordable abortions before Roe v Wade. The Tia Lessin and Emma Pildes’ documentary reveals the hardships during that time and the women who worked tirelessly to provide service to an estimated 11,000 women. They were known as The Janes, in order to protect their identity and help keep patients safe. This fascinating true story illustrates how the fight for safe legal abortions was, and continues to be, an uphill battle in the U.S. All these years later, it’s hard to imagine going back to that difficult time, and the film, through interviews with several of the real Janes, traces what might happen again if prevailing winds continue to blow.

The film will be introduced by fiction writer and blogger, Randy Kraft. A brief discussion will follow the screening.

Toni Morrison – The Pieces I Am | March 17, 3 p.m.

The Disappearance of Shere Hite | March 20, 6:30 p.m.

Maya – And Still I Rise | March 23, 3 p.m.

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry | March 27, 6:30 p.m.
