LOCA’s Family Art Classes at Laguna Beach Public Library have been a smashing success. The “happy hour” 4:30-5:30 p.m. timeslot has made it convenient for parents and kids to enjoy a creative learning space, led by Allison Keefe. “We encourage parents and kids to work together,” Keefe said.

Shibori and Indigo Dyeing – February 21 and 28

Wednesday, Feb. 21 and 28, 1-4 p.m.

Shibori and Indigo Dyeing with Reem Khalil

This two-session textile workshop will demonstrate the ancient practice of Shibori tying, clamping, stitching and wrapping of silk or paper. This is a two-part class held on two consecutive Wednesdays in the Susi Q art room of the Laguna Beach Community and Susi Q Senior Center.

Shibori will then be dipped in an indigo vat. You will walk away with several pieces of wearable and fine art pieces.

Secrets of Art Conservation

LCAD Gallery: Everyone who appreciates fine art will love meeting Susan Brown, arts conservationist and Jennifer Keil, director of Moulton Museum and founder of 70 Degrees.

Brown has restored European masterpieces from Caravaggio to Monet, and American pieces from Billy Al Bengston and Jackson Pollack to Frank Cuprien and William Wendt. Her clients include Chapman University, The Irvine Company, Laguna Art Museum, Festival of Arts and Sherman Library, to name just a few.

Brown will show tools, such as heat spatulas, and conservation pigments, used in her studio. She will share how works come to her, her research and examination process, and how she decides on the proper level of conservation for each piece. “I rely a lot on my clients’ goals, and how certain pieces fit into their collections.”

Among her clients is the Moulton Museum in Laguna Hills. Director Jennifer Keil will share insights about the Moulton collection, and how Brown’s collaboration is integral to building and preserving their collection.

Brown will perform a condition report on a painting by Ruth Peabody

As a special treat, attendees will view a rare painting by Ruth Peabody, recently discovered in a historical Laguna Beach home, and never before shown. Brown will perform a condition report for all to watch.

Mentor Paint Together with Michael Obermeyer

Join LPAPA Signature Artist Member Michael Obermeyer online on Tuesday, March 12 at 10 a.m. for a two-hour fun and informative LPAPA+LOCA live-streamed Mentor Paint Together. In this online virtual painting lesson, Obermeyer will demonstrate his oil painting process, step-by-step, brush stroke by brush stroke, as he paints the Laguna Coastal Atmosphere using a photo reference.

Registrants can choose to paint together with Obermeyer, watch live as he paints, describes his process and answers your questions. All paid registrants will have unlimited access to the post-event “play, pause and paint” recording.

Lisa Mansour, a Sawdust artist whose work can be seen at Quorum Gallery throughout the year, is offering this sweet treat. Gather your young friends and meet at Primi Donuts in Monarch Bay Plaza, Laguna Beach for a delicious snack and a painting lesson. Using one of Lisa’s donut paintings, you and your friends will “decorate” a donut using your imaginations and an array of acrylic paints and embellishments.

Learn the art of block printing with a variety of materials. In this workshop, we focus on printing on fabric but will touch on the techniques that will translate to other materials. Each participant will receive a cotton tote and lots of paper to print their original designs on and take home. If you really get the printing bug, we will also have extra blanks, t-shirts, scarves and cards if you really get into it…once you start you won’t want to stop. These make for great gifts! Free yourself to be Bold and Expressive! Lisa Rainey will demonstrate her floral painting techniques step-by-step, encouraging you to capture the essence of the flower by working from life.

This class is about your creative expression through painting, and your own view of what you see. Use your imagination and play with shapes, color and line. Rainey loves to use her knowledge and love of watercolor to bring a fresh way of painting in acrylics. Starting with warm washes first, we will build up the layers using thicker paint with brushes and palette knives. The desire is to create a floral painting that glows from within. Khalil invites participants to learn the art of Indigo & Shibori and enjoy refreshments while making a summer sarong. Learn how to make Organic Indigo dye vat and original patterns using the ancient technique Shibori. In this workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of Shibori pattern making and how to create a variety of shapes focusing on folded, tied and clamped resist dyeing. Monotype Printing on an Etching Press

Instructor: Cynthia Fletcher

Using brayers and lithography inks, students will coat a plexiglass plate with color. An assortment of thin shapes – natural, manmade and shaped by your hand will be inked and arranged on the base plate. After rolling the plate through an etching press, the resulting print will a surprising springboard into a series of monotypes you will make during this studio session.

This is a relaxed introduction to the art of printmaking. It requires no previous experience or drawing skill. It is open to people who want to explore a new medium and who are somewhere between 6 and 96. Participants will enjoy getting inky together, the exploration of something new and then marvel at the prints produced! To register, click here.
