Providence Mission Hospital honored on Cal Hospital Compare’s 2024 Opioid Honor Roll

Providence Mission Hospital earned a highly coveted spot on the 2024 Opioid Honor Roll from Cal Hospital Compare (CHC) for demonstrating superior performance in the fight against the opioid epidemic. This is the second consecutive year that the hospital has received this designation.

CHC began publishing the Opioid Honor Roll in 2019 in order to highlight California hospitals that are actively working to combat the opioid epidemic. The list recognizes adult and acute care hospitals in California that are going above and beyond.

Hospitals have to demonstrate excellence in four categories to be included on the Honor Roll list: prevention of new opioid starts, identification and treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD), prevention of overdose and development of an overall culture of opioid safety.

“It is such an honor to be recognized by Cal Hospital Compare,” said Seth Teigen, Mission Hospital chief executive. “Providence Mission Hospital is committed to combating the devastating consequences of the opioid epidemic – our continued inclusion on the Honor Roll validates this important body of work. We will continue the fight through prevention, education and treatment.”

The CHC has evaluated the performance of hospitals in California for more than 10 years, in areas such as Maternity Care and Patient Safety. The addition of an opioid evaluation reflects the increasing need to address the epidemic.

Through the Opioid Safe Hospital Self-Assessment, hospitals measure their opioid safety levels. Not only does the assessment help the CHC identify the incredible hospitals acting as a force for change, but it also allows the organization to identify best practices from the participating hospitals.

Providence Mission Hospital recently received distinctions celebrating excellence in a number of clinical areas. Blue Cross California and Blue Shield of California honored the cardiac, maternity spine care programs as a Blue Distinction Center – it recognizes expertise in specialized care. Healthgrades recognized the cardiac surgery program as one of the Top 10% of hospitals in the nation, awarding the hospital with the Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award. Newsweek named Providence Mission Hospital on its 2024 list of the World’s Best Hospitals and U.S. News and World Report ranked Mission Hospital as No. 1 in South Orange County.
