Sawdust Festival adds more winter classes and announces Ski Week Art Camp

Sawdust Art Classes has many expressive and informative classes offered every week that the Sawdust Art Festival wants to share with you (far too many to mention here!).

Sawdust is excited to announce Ski Week Art Camp, February 19, 20, 22 and 23 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Participants can sign up for one day or the entire week.

Jewelry & Textile Valentine heART on February 9, 10 and 16

Jewelry & Textile Valentine heART with Tatyana Zen

Join Sawdust artist Tatyana Zen in a fun, Valentine-themed mixed media class. Create a lovely heart heirloom, bejeweled with upcycled gold jewelry, rhinestones, pearls and shells, on a rich, fabric display.

Cost: $95 per student. All supplies are provided, except for the frame. Optionally, you can bring your own special treasures to add to your artwork.

Pottery Wheel Experience

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit at a potter’s wheel and actually throw a pot?

Robert Jones will take you through the process step-by-step, allowing you to gain confidence so that, with his help, you will make your own pottery pieces on the wheel. Each student will make two pieces that he will then fire and glaze in his own studio so that you will end up with a beautifully glazed mug or bowl which you can truly call your own. Please note, the firing and glazing time will take approximately 3-4 weeks before ready to collect. If you wish your items to be mailed, there will be an additional cost to cover postage and packing.

Absolutely no experience is necessary to take this class, however closed-toe shoes and casual, comfortable clothing are recommended. All materials are included in the cost.

Cost: $105.

Mosaic Art – February 10 and 17

Saturday, Feb. 10 and 17, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., two days

Introduction to Mosaic Art

The ancient art of mosaics is one of the most beautiful and oldest in the history of mankind. Participants will be working closely with Ron Shearer, you will create a mosaic that you will be proud to display. It will open a whole new world of creativity that you can easily continue on your own. Step-by-step, he will take you through the process of design, materials, cutting techniques and then carefully guide you through the application, initially using glue for positioning. You’ll have a little bit of fun “homework” to do between classes. When you return to the second workshop, you can really home in on the fine details and finishing your artwork. A wonderful, informative and creative workshop, and one that they have had many requests for. This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners, or those who want to fine-tune their skills. All materials are provided including supplies from WitsEnd Mosaics.

This workshop will also be offered March 16 and 23 and April 13 and 20.

Cost: $350 per student which is fully inclusive of six hours of intensive instruction over two weekends, and all materials including a pair of nippers that you can keep, mosaic glass tiles, design and backing board. Sleeping Fairies in a Magical Nest – February 10

Sleeping Fairies with Melissa Belland

Transport yourself to a miniature world of magic with Sawdust artist Melissa Belland, in her enchanting Laguna Beach studio. Class includes all the magical elements needed to create a whimsical, personalized fairy, sleeping peacefully in a precious little nest. Belland will provide a unique hand painted head and sturdy body to build upon. Silken hairstyles, clothing, majestic crowns, and wings are all important elements you’ll choose from to make your fairy completely personal and one-of-a-kind.

Cost: $100.

Art Meets Technology – February 16, 20, 23

Art Meets Technology

A brand-new pop-up class where you can really let your imagination fly! With AI technology, you will create a computerized image using your ideas. This printed image will be the basis for your painting. You’ll transfer this image onto paper using a printing plate.

The process is simple with really satisfying results. You will learn to use different types of mediums in this fun class, including gelli plates, posca markers, acrylic paints, and other mixed media including Mica powder and stencils. A great way to loosen up those creative juices. Suitable for both adults and children over 10 years of age. Once you have registered for this class, you will be asked for a few sentences that best describe what you would like to paint so that the instructor can prepare your digital image. If you wish, you may bring your own image or design.

Cost: $45 per student. Cost is inclusive of all materials, a colored digital print and a finished acrylic painting that will be framed in a mat board for you to take home.

Each class will explore a different technique in the art of printmaking. Some classes may have two or three different activities, giving students a better understanding of how that art material and method works. Students can participate in all four days of Art Camp for $150 or take an individual class for $50.

Basics of Sewing – February 19 and 21

Monday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 10:30 a.m.

Basics of Sewing

Learn the basics of sewing and pattern making in this super cute class that is ideal for ages 7 and over (adults are welcome, too!). Absolutely no previous experience is required for this introduction to sewing. Artist Carmen Gundelach will show you how to make your own bag. You’ll learn to trace the pattern onto fabric and cut it out before using a sewing machine to put it all together. Materials and tools will be provided.

You can either bring your favorite fabric or choose from supplies that Gundelach will have. If you choose to bring your own, please make sure to bring enough materials. If you have any questions about suitable fabric and amount of fabric, reach out to Sawdust at learnart@sawdustartfestival.org.

This class requires three students minimum, so please encourage your friends to sign up.

Portrait Photography

Looking to feel good in front of the camera and confident behind the lens? Wondering how to master the elements of light, pose and mood? In this one-on-one class, professional Photographer Mary Church will take you step-by-step through the process, helping you to understand the fundamentals of how to use light and light settings, equipment choices, backgrounds, poses and clothing options. You will be photographed and photographing, allowing you the perspective from both model and photographer. The class will take place in a Studio Setting using natural light photography.

This is a two-hour class; you will receive one 5” x 7” and two 4” x 6” photographs – just in time for those holiday cards. This is a one-on-one class. For larger groups, email learnart@sawdustartfestival.org.

Magical Diorama – February 24

Saturday, Feb. 24, 12 p.m.

Magical Diorama

Transport yourself to a miniature world of magic in a box. Each two-hour class is held in the artist’s home studio filled with all the elements that you will need to create your little world of fantasy. You can choose from an array of intriguing elements to build a unique creation that is evocative of whimsy and magic. Feel free to bring your own memorable tokens, scraps of letters or mementos to add your own personal touch. Figurines, broken jewelry, trim, or buttons all add interest to your fantasy realm. No experience is necessary, just a desire to have fun and play. This is a fun, funky class where the only requirements are enthusiasm, patience and a smile!

Cost: $100.
