Sawdust Art Classes has many expressive and informative classes offered every week that the Sawdust Art Festival wants to share with you (far too many to mention here!).

Mixed Media – March 22

Day 2: Friday, March 22, 10 a.m.- 1 p.m.

Mixed Media Workshop

In this fun yet informative class, you will create a mixed media 12” x 12” painting under the professional guidance of Artist Hedy Buzan. Step-by-step, Buzan will show you how to combine collage, drawing and acrylic paint into a composition; you will also discover some interesting tools and approaches for creating shapes and textures.

In the second part of this workshop, you will focus on selecting a color palette. You will learn basic color theory, paint mixing tips and application – all the tools you need to complete a wonderful piece of mixed media artwork.

Please note, a minimum of four participants are required for this class to take place. Your prompt registration and sharing with interested friends or colleagues would be much appreciated. Thank you for your support.

Animal Portraits – March 22

Animal Portraits

Are you an animal lover who loves to paint? Join Sawdust for this fun and value-packed class to the alla prima style of oil painting, or “wet on wet” direct oil painting.

Attendees will paint the animal portrait from a photo (provided) or you can bring a photo of your pet. All skill levels are welcome.
In this fast-paced, two-hour class, Tatyana Zen will take you through all stages and tools – brushes, paint, palette and support. You will learn not only the fundamentals – composition, drawing, establishing value and color harmony, but also be encouraged to notice unique characteristics that capture the essence of the animal.

Note: A reference photo is provided. Students can use their own photo (printed or on a digital device to reference during class).

Pottery Wheel Experience – March 23

Pottery Wheel Experience

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit at a potter’s wheel and actually throw a pot?

Robert Jones will take you through the process step-by-step, allowing you to gain confidence so that, with his help, you will make your own pottery pieces on the wheel. Each student will make two pieces that he will then fire and glaze in his own studio so that you will end up with a beautifully glazed mug or bowl which you can truly call your own. Please note, the firing and glazing time will take approximately three to four weeks before your pieces are ready to collect. If you wish your items to be mailed, there will be an additional cost to cover postage and packing.

Absolutely no experience is necessary to take this class, however closed-toe shoes and casual, comfortable clothing are recommended. All materials are included in the cost.

Intro to Mosaic Art – March 23

Intro to Mosaic Art

A two-day workshop over two weekends.

The ancient art of mosaics is one of the most beautiful and oldest in the history of mankind. Working closely with Ron Shearer, you will create a mosaic that you will be proud to display. It will open a whole new world of creativity that you can easily continue on your own. Step-by-step, he will take you through the process of design, materials, cutting techniques and then carefully guide you through the application, initially using glue for positioning. You’ll have a little bit of fun “homework” to do between classes. When you return to the second workshop, you can really home in on the fine details and finishing your artwork. A wonderful, informative and creative workshop and one that they have had many requests for. This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners or those who want to fine-tune their skills. All materials are provided including supplies from WitsEnd Mosaics.

Cost: $350 per student which is fully inclusive of six hours of intensive instruction over two weekends, and all materials including a pair of nippers that you can keep, mosaic glass tiles, design and backing board. Celebrity Portrait and DIY Frame

All levels are welcome. All supplies are provided. Paint this portrait of celebrated singer Taylor Swift and make your own unique frame. Bring all your creativity, fun and fan-love to create this contemporary acrylic portrait of Swift adorned in a DIY frame designed and made entirely by you.

In this one-of-the-kind 3.5-hour class, Tatyana Zen will take you through all steps of painting the portrait in acrylic, and creating your own frame using cardboard, paint, color paper, buttons, fabric, glitter and faux flowers.

You’ll bring home an impressive mid-size artwork. Enjoy it in your home as a contemporary art piece or gift it to your best friend. Final product size is 20” x 24”. Canvas size is 16” x 20”. The DIY frame is 2” wide.

With wine, so sip and enjoy. This class will take place outside on their outdoor patio.

Glassblowing – March 23

Intro to Glassblowing

Encounter the magic of glassblowing with one of their master Sawdust glassblowers. In this truly unique experience, you will be taken through the glassblowing process step-by-step in their famous glass demo booth. You will receive individual, one-on-one instruction to create a beautiful piece of artwork.

Classes are currently available Saturdays at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. However, they are happy to accommodate another day/time during the week. The two-hour lesson is for one person. For groups of 2 or more, contact Sawdust directly to book your class at, or call 949.497.0514.

I Spy Your Eye Photography – March 28

I Spy Your Eye Photography with Mary Church

Join artist Mary Church in this three-part class covering the key principles of photography. In the first part of the class, Church will talk you through the key elements including perspective, composition, color, design and imagery. Then, under her guidance, attendees will explore the grounds of the Sawdust Festival to create three different printed images (one 8.5” x 11” and two 4” x 6”) that you will take home. The final element of this class will be a display of your images and discoveries that you made during your time in class.

To participate in this class, you will need to have either a digital camera, an iPhone/iPad, or Android/smart phone (all digital devices welcome). This class is suitable for ages 10-110.

Drypoint Etching – March 29

Friday, March 29, 10 a.m.

Drypoint Etching with Hedy Buzan

Learn this fascinating printmaking process with long-time artist and printmaker, Hedy Buzan. Step-by-step, Buzan will show you how to print line etchings using the drypoint process. You will start the class by drawing a simple design (either from a favorite photo or picture that you bring with you, or from an image Buzan will provide). You will then transfer it onto a plate, which is printed onto paper using an etching press. Buzan will also demonstrate how to create prints at home without using a press. Your beautiful, finished print will be mounted on matt board, ready for you to frame and hang on your wall.

Intro to Sewing – April 4

Introduction to Sewing

Learn the basics of sewing and pattern making in this super cute class that is ideal for ages 7 and over (adults are welcome, too!). Absolutely no previous experience is required for this introduction to sewing. Artist Carmen Gundelach will show you how to make your own bag. You’ll learn to trace the pattern onto fabric and cut it out before using a sewing machine to put it all together. Materials and tools will be provided.

You can either bring your favorite fabric or choose from supplies that Carmen will have. If you choose to bring your own, make sure to bring enough materials. If you have any questions about suitable fabric and amount of fabric, reach out at

Women’s Retreat Workshop – Michelle Burt

For a while now, Michelle Burt has been wanting to create a safe space for women to come together, reduce stress and create together. She has a process where participants can transform the stress of their lives into something beautiful.

Join in the adventure of creating abstract art by sheer intuition. Like dancing, you’ll find your own rhythm utilizing different textures, materials, colorful mediums and tools. You will explore oil pastels, acrylic paint, specialty papers, graphite, charcoal and inks. There are so many different items to choose from.

Women will share a lovely afternoon exploring and creating an abstract piece of art that will inspire them every day.
