Susi Q expresses gratitude to the Dorene and Lee Butler Family Foundation for its generous $1 million gift

Susi Q board members and staff were stunned and beyond grateful this past month to receive a $1 million legacy gift from the Dorene and Lee Butler Family Foundation to support the Laguna Beach nonprofit.

Given by General Lee Butler in honor of his beloved (late) wife Dorene Butler, who served on Susi Q’s board for many years, the fund will be given out over five years and added to the organization’s endowment, not the annual operating budget, to provide growth over time.

“We are extremely grateful for this most generous gift,” said Nadia Babayi, executive director of Laguna Beach Seniors/aka the Susi Q. “The Butler Family Foundation has provided support for the Susi Q since 2010. Their annual support nourishes our outreach department and the social services that we provide for vulnerable seniors in Laguna Beach.

“With this new gift, our Care Management Department will be renamed the ‘Dorene Cares Office,’” Babayi added. “All investments in our endowment provide long-term support for our organization in perpetuity and this gift will be a great help.”

A plaque will be created at the Susi Q Center bearing the following words:

“[Dedicated to] Dorene Nunley Butler, longstanding member of our board whose unquenchable spirit and loving presence elevated our work and brightened our lives. The programs and services available through the Dorene Cares Office are a testament to her devotion and generosity,” said Babayi.

The Susi Q’s Care Management Department (now the Dorene Cares Office) provides free consultation, education and practical resources for vulnerable seniors, enabling them to stay safe, informed and independent.
